Phase 2 of Rec Park Bunker Project to Start Soon

Beginning in April of 2014, the second phase of the bunker renovation and greens rehabilitation project at Recreation Park 18 Golf Course will begin. The accompanying aerial shows the next phases of the project, which will take about 4-6 weeks from start to finish. The remaining greenside bunkers on holes #5 uphill and #16 will be removed, as will all of the fairway or cross bunkers on holes #2, #4, #16 and #18. A greenside bunker will be added to hole #16, and new fairway bunkers will be added on holes #2, #4, #9, #14 and #18. The fairway bunker on hole #17 will be rebuilt. Also, the greens on holes #3, #11 and #17 will be enlarged in a similar fashion to what was done to greens #4 and #8 last year. This project is not as invasive as last year's project, and should result in less disruption to play.

Some of the other Capital Improvement Projects planned for this year throughout the City of Long Beach Golf Operation include:

  • New cart paths on 2 holes, the leveling and resodding of 3 tee boxes and driving range lighting improvements at Heartwell Park GC.
  • Leveling and resodding 3 tee boxes at El Dorado Park GC, as well as addressing safety issues with approximately 40 unsafe trees and the planting of at least 20 new trees in strategic locations,
  • A new cart path from the 7th green to the 8th tee, the renovation of 4 bunkers and the enlargement of the 3rd, 4th and 8th tee boxes at Rec Park South.
  • The removal of over 60 diseased or dead trees at Skylinks and the planting of over 35 new trees in strategic locations.
