Eric Meichtry Wins 2014 Long Beach Open

LBOpen-cover-pic smMurrietta's Eric Meichtry became the second person to win the Long Beach Open more than once, when he won his second title on July 27, 2014. Meichtry finished the 72-hole event at 21-under par, edging Ben Geyer of Arbuckle and Nick Sherwood of Albany, Oregon. Meichtry joined Utah's Todd Fischer (1998 and 2000) as the only two-time winners of the Long Beach Open as Eric also won the Open in 2011.

Long Beach State's Kevin Lee edged out defending champion Pete Fernandez, Jr, in the amateur portion of the Open, finishing at 14-under par. Complete results can be found at www.lbgolffestival.com or at on our website.

Eric Meichtry lines up his putt on the 72nd hole of the 2014 Long Beach Open   Meichtry built up a lead and then coasted home to a 1-shot victory   Meichtry laid up on the water-guarded 18th hole and wedged his approach to approximately 15 feet from the hole.

Long Beach State's Kevin Lee defeated defending champion Pete Fernandez, Jr., in the amateur portion of the Open. He is shown here with Tournament Chairman Bob Chaffee and Assistant Director Kathy Eaton, who are both retiring after this year's Golf Festival events.   Greg Hetzer, who had a nice amateur and professional golf career in the 1970s before regaining his amateur status and joining Virginia CC was inducted into the Long Beach Golf Hall of Fame for 2014.   Long time instructor at Heartwell Golf Course, Phil Kessler, was inducted into the Long Beach Golf Hall of Fame for 2014.
