Drake Wins Long Beach Match Play Championship

L-B-G-F-035_400x200Recent Long Beach State graduate Michael Drake of Riverside captured the 85th Long Beach Match Play City Championship at El Dorado Park GC on June 13th.

Drake defeated recent Cerritos HS grad Kevin Techakanokboon with a 4 & 2 win in the scheduled 36-hole final match.  This was Drake’s second win in the Match Play, having also won in 2007, the last time the Championship was conducted at El Dorado.

Drake finished 3rd in the 36-hole qualifying portion of the tournament with a 5-under par 139.  The Qualifying was won by Drake’s 49er teammate Raymond Ho (8-under par score of 136), but Ho lost in the second round of matches to eventual semi-finalist Lou Carrasco, Jr.

Drake will miss the Long Beach Men’s City Championship on July 8-10 as he participates in the Southern California Amateur Championship, and will make his professional debut in the $160,000 Long Beach Open on July 28.  Last year, Drake was the low amateur in the Long Beach Open.
