As we begin 2011, we can look back on a very active year in Long Beach Golf.
Recreation Parks GC celebrated its 100th Birthday on April 30th, and in the late summer and fall, the 80-year old Clubhouse underwent a nearly $200,000 renovation which included new carpet and paint and completely refurbished restrooms.
The 4th Annual Long Beach Mayor's Trophy at Skylinks GC in July raised nearly $30,000 for Special Olympics of Southern California and Long Beach Junior Golf. For the 2011 Mayor's Trophy, a pledge of raising at least $30,000 for the new Ronald McDonald House has been made.
The Long Beach Golf Festival was again a smashing success, with literally thousands of rounds played by over 600 competitors in 13 events designed for every sector of the golfing public. Visit the Long Beach Golf Festival Link on this site for complete results and next year's schedule.
In July, Long Beach's own Paul Goydos became only the 4th man in the nearly 80-year history of the PGA Tour to card a 59, in the opening round of the John Deere Classic. Paul was also named as an Assistant Captain for the Ryder Cup in Whales, which he referred to as the greatest sporting event that could ever be imagined.
In October, Rec Park South Course and the City of Long Beach hosted the 1st Annual USGLL National Championship and the team from Long Beach handily defeated the team from Conklin, NY.
The Long Beach Junior Golf Association ended another successful year with over 500 members and 40+ weeks of activities. Mayfair High Schools Josh Iverson was named the 2010 Player of the Year at the year-end awards banquet.
