2011 Year in Review

El-Dorado-164 400x200As we enter the year 2012, it is worth taking a look at the year that was in Long Beach golf.

The 5th Annual Mayor's Trophy Golf Tournament at Skylinks GC in July raised over $50,000 for the new Ronald McDonald House on the Campus of the Miller Children's Hospital at Memorial Medical Centre. The 2012 Mayor's Trophy will be held on July 16th.

The Long Beach Golf Festival crowned champions in 13 separate events, highlighted by Eric Meichtry's 2-stroke win in the Long Beach Open – a win worth $29,000 for the resident of Murrieta. Over 1,000 people played in at least one of this year's Golf Festival, and over 2,300 total rounds of competitive golf were logged on the City's five courses.

Heartwell park Golf Course hosted a Play Golf America Day in cooperation with the Southern California PGA and manufacturers like Cleveland and TaylorMade. Several hundred people were either introduced to the game or received lessons on April 16th. Heartwell is also the home of the Long Beach Junior Golf Association, which conducted over 40 weeks of lessons, clinics, competitions and meals for 578 red-shirted members.

Numerous Capital Improvement projects were completed on the five City courses in 2011, paid for from a fund generated from green fees charged on all of the courses. Major projects included installing lights on the first three holes at Big Rec so that players could tee off early and get home in time to do their chores, and 4 tee box complexes at Rec were also rebuilt. A new short game practice area and a freshwater irrigation system for the greens were installed at El Dorado GC, and an extension to the driving range fence at Hertwell was installed to aid in safety for the new school being built where DeMille Middle School was bulldozed. Architectural drawings and a pre-fab building to replace the 54-year old Maintenance Building at Skylinks were begun, and that project will be completed in 2012. Plans for 2012 include:

El Dorado Park GC
Rebuilding green-side bunkers, asphalt and lighting repairs and improvements in the parking lots, laser-leveling and re-sodding up to five tee box complexes and replacing the roof of the on-course snack bar.

Recreation Park 18 GC
Laser-levling and re-sodding up to five tee box complexes, slurry-sealing and restriping the parking lot, and building a permanent cement pad and canopy for the 10th tee BBQ.

Recreation Park South CG
Renovation of the restrooms in the Clubhouse and slurry-sealing and re-striping the parking lot.

Heartwell Park GC
Installing cart paths around some tee boxes and greens and laser-leveling and re-sodding many tee boxes.

Skylinks at Long Beach GC
Rerouting the hole rotation on the front nine to the long-standing rotation in place before the renovation of the course, resealing and re-striping the parking lot and fixing security doors on the cart barn.

Finally, El Dorado Park GC will be celebrating it's 50th Anniversary in 2012. Originally opened in July of 1962, the construction of El Dorado GC completed what is one of the premier municipal golf systems in the United States.
